As the sun beat down and summer appeared to have arrived at last….it was difficult to appreciate that a new football season was just around the corner.
But on a glorious evening when a BBQ on the beach might have been more appropriate, Tommy Widdrington took his developing squad to Gorings Mead for a friendly with Horsham, managed by former Borough player and coach Simon Colbran, and including Gary Charman and Billy Medlock.
The Borough side, which included a number of triallists, made an encouraging start playing some attractive football without really troubling the Hornets defence, until Lawrence Yiga broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time to give Borough a 1-0 advantage.
In the second period Borough dominated. The defence remained defiant as chances were being taken up front. Goals from Mark Nwokeji, Darren Lok and an own goal provided a 4-0 victory…and it could have been more had Lok’s fine shot not rattled the crossbar and a well-taken ‘goal’ not been disallowed for a highly questionable ‘offside’ decision!
A good work-out, and the team will now look forward to the trip to Whitehawk on Friday evening (27th) and the visit of AFC Wimbledon this coming Saturday (28th July).
