Home tie v Welling awaits....
A Thursday night trip deep into the Kent countryside, close to Brands Hatch, awaited the Borough U18s as they travelled to Corinthian FC in the Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup. They were in illustrious company as the team minibus parked alongside the Charlton Athletic minibus, also there with one of their teams playing on another pitch.
Boss Graeme Mintrim made two changes from the previous game with Matt Pickering in for Sam Cash and Mohamed Zabadne in for Mo Corrie and First team player/coach Ian Simpemba joined supporters as he looked over potential players in his role as Borough U19s Alliance manager.
Borough started brightly playing down the sloping but superb lush green carpet of a pitch. 12 minutes in, the hardworking Luca Page closed down a defender and won a free kick on the right hand side. Although some distance from goal, Ali Rainford struck a sweet left foot shot over everyone and into the bottom left of the goal for 1-0. Borough continued against a dogged Corinthian defence but were limited to chances, striker Tyler Pearson going closest as he hit the side netting just on the stroke of half time.
Playing up the slope in the second half and Borough were quickly dominating playing out comfortably from the back. A second goal was needed though as these ties go straight to extra time and penalties and sure enough it came in the 52nd minute as the 18s won a corner. A great delivery caused problems for the Corinthian defence who did not deal with it and as the ball bounced up on the edge of the area Matt Pickering nodded a powerful looping header back in to beat the ‘keeper for 2-0. The 18s fitness levels were proving valuable as Corinthian were fading and Harry Colbran saw his shot cannon back off the crossbar after a decent lay off from Pearson as Borough sought another. A couple of changes with 15 minutes to go saw them go 3-0 up as pacey sub Callum Buchanan drove a hard low ball into the area from the right and Pearson was there to divert past the ‘keeper.
Full time score of 3-0 in an entertaining FA Cup tie against a team who were no pushovers and sets up a great home FA Youth Cup tie v Welling United on Monday 18th September (K/O TBC)
