Midfielder Smith progressed through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace and was awarded a one-year contract in the summer of 2008. On 3 August 2009, Smith signed a one-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion after impressing during a trial with the club, making his professional debut for Brighton during the 7–1 defeat to Huddersfield Town on 18 August 2009. He signed a six month contract extension in May 2011. After being released by the Seagulls Smith went on to train and eventually sign a contract until the end of the 2011–12 season with Leyton Orient, before joining Dover during the current pre-season.
Boro boss Tommy Widrrington commented "I was aware of Jamie during the close season just gone, and was interested in bringing him here then, but he opted to go to Dover. Things have obviously not worked out for him in Kent but I am delighted that he has agreed to join us at Priory Lane for the rest of this season, and look forward to working with him over the coming months."
