Eastbourne Borough is a community focused football club, and this year have decided to recognise the contribution of the Armed Services to the country as a whole. As such, Non-league Day will see Borough making a donation to the 'Help for Hero's' charity from all entry monies for the Sutton game on Non-League Day. The club have also invited Joe Townsend and his family as VIP guests for the day, together with free entry to the 'Band of Brothers' and 'Band of Sisters'.
Whilst 'Help For Heroes' is widely known the 'Band of' organisations are less so. The Band of Brothers offers life-long support and opportunities to Servicemen or women who have become wounded, injured or sick during, or as a consequence of their service since 9/11. The Band of Sisters is open to loved ones, both male and female, and offers life-long support to those who provide direct support to our Servicemen and women who have become wounded, injured or sick during, or as a consequence of their service since 9/11.
Eastbourne resident Joe Townsend lost both his legs after standing on an anti-tank mine while on duty with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan, but this year Joe carried the Paralympic Flame into the stadium in front of 80,000 people and as millions watched around the globe, and the determined former Meads and Ratton pupil amazed all by flying in on a zipwire. It was a sight which became one of the iconic images of the Paralympic Games.
It is hoped that as well as the clubs donation that further monies can be raised via Collection Buckets that have been sent out for use on the day at Priory Lane, and that football supporters will show support for the grass roots game on the day and also contribute to the worthwhile organisations that are the focus for the club on this occasion.
The club have now received H4H 'buckets' for donation collection at the fixture and are looking for volunteers on the day to collect donations. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Non-League Day is now in its third year and details of this national event can be found on their website available here.
